“Making history or leaving a legacy, the choice is yours!”

Recently in some of my travels, I had the privilege of visiting amazing sites like Washington, D.C. and Jamestown, Virginia. As I encountered the historical landmarks, I began to reflect on two aspects history, the chronological marking of events on a timeline and a legacy and the inspiring stories of people or movements which transformed lives and continues to impact many lives today. Have you ever thought about what effect your life would have after you are gone?

I recently watched the movie, “The Greatest Showman,” about the ringleader P.T Barnum’s early years starting the world-renowned circus entertainment production. One of my favorite quotes from the movie was, “No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else.” I cannot say he was a coward for what he set out to do. He took discarded and shunned lives and brought purpose to individuals which seemed to have no place in the world. Essentially, he reframed the lives of non-ordinary people to be extraordinary stars! Their weakness became their strength. I was inspired!

Soon I was thinking about other people in the past who did more than just exist in history, they thrived in challenges to set this world right and make a difference like, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, and Rosa Parks. Their progressive acts went against the societal grain to change the course of all our lives. They each left a legacy. Not just for the lives they came in contact with were changed forever, however, their effect was rippling past physical and mental borders.

When I think of all the obstacles these people faced, I began to swell with affirmation in the authentic spiritual work which must have taken place inside each of them. No one ever found their purpose to shine by being fake. We must all do some work to find out who we are deep down in our heart and soul to live out our purpose. When you face adversity what character or spiritual strength is uncovered in you? Will you just make history or leave a legacy? My prayer is you will be challenged to face life boldly and in the fullness of knowing your spiritual pillar of strength.
