"Just try to make the world a better place for your having been here."
~ General James H. Doolittle

As we reflect on the significance of Memorial Day, we remember the sacrifices of the greatest generation who served during World War II. One such group is the Doolittle Raiders who carried out the bombing raid on Tokyo on 18 April 1942. The Scriptures tell us that there is a time for peace and a time for war.

As we reflect on our nation’s time of war in 1942, we are reminded of the tremendous faith and courage of the Doolittle Raiders and their visionary leader, Jimmy Doolittle. These men found the strength to carry out their bold and daring mission which bolstered American morale and commitment to defend freedom at any cost.

As we remember our serving in harm’s way, let us remember the words of the prophet in Isaiah 40:30-31: “While youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall, that those who hope in the Lord, will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

The month of May promises to be very busy with Mother’s Day, children finishing school, and ending with the Memorial Day observance. As Guardsmen, we are constantly being pulled in different directions with our civilian employer, family, and service obligation. Sacrifice has always been a prerequisite to military service and I want to thank you and your families for the ongoing sacrifices each of you make as a Swamp Fox!

As you prepare for Memorial Day at the end of this month, please remember that freedom is never free. Remember the great sacrifices of our men and women serving at home and abroad. Especially remember the families of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, that they lay down their life for their friends.” These words of Christ are very true of this present generation of warriors.

Thank you, Swamp Foxes, for your sacrifices to keep America free. Semper Primus!
