January Chaplain's Reflections

Hello Swamp Foxes! Welcome back after a month filled with festivities, food, and fellowship. If your December was like many, it was a blur and now 2022 is upon us. There are expectations and desires to look forward to with the coming of the New Year, a chance to reboot, reflect, and re-center ourselves.
As we enter the New Year, reflect on the accomplishments and goals you may or may not have achieved last year. According to the MSN article, “Making New Year's resolutions? Know 6 reasons why you don't stick with them”, only 16 percent see their goals achieved at the end of the year. There are various reasons provided to why these resolutions are not met which include unrealistic goals, no accountability, and no solution to track progress. Could improving these reasons truly make a difference in accomplishing our goals?
Our Chaplain Corps team encourages each other during drill periods to make notes of the accomplishments (EPRs and OPRs) achieved during the weekend to ensure we will not be scrambling when the annual review period approaches. Personally, I find that planning and making deliberate calendar reminders does improve my production.
During 2022, I challenge you to find one new hobby or interest that will bring peace and joy to your life. Drawing attention away from distractions in our lives will bring the focus to a place where productivity can be increased while building a spiritual resiliency. This resiliency will provide a protection mechanism for future struggles you may face or provide an avenue to share with your fellow Airmen how you navigated the turbulent waters. Journaling, exercising, and meditation are a few ideas for continuing to grow professionally, spiritually, and socially as we face new obstacles and ways to navigate this New Year.
